Cro Mags is more than a cornerstone in Hardcore History. Hailing from New York, they have redifined the hardcore sound and gave it a second life after the first wave of punk hardcore bands faded away. Their 1986 "The Age Of Quarrel" LP is nothing but a real masterpiece. Cold, raw and tough metallic NYHC,always copied, never equaled. They then recorded 3 awesome records, less hardcore but still with this Cro Mags felling / tension you can't find somewhere else : "Alpha Omega"(1992), "Near Death Experience"(1993) and a double live album "Hard Times in an Age Of Quarrel". Unfortunately, two of their most influencial founders members, John Joseph ( Bloodclot) and Harley Flanagan ( The Stimulators / Harley's War)had several big arguments which led to Cro Mags break up.
John Joseph then performed Cro Mags and Bad Brains material touring under the name of Fearless Vampire Killers.
Anyway, this band is marks a huge turning point in hardcore history, in the sound and the attitude.
Checking them out is more than an advice!
Also if you are interested in learning about Cro Mags singer John Joseph incredible life and about the band history, you should check his book out "The Evolution Of a Cro-Magnon". One of the best hardcore related book I've ever read.
